Abstract

Asthma has been associated with gynaecological morbidity. In 1999-2000 women taking part in two national birth cohort studies in Britain were interviewed (5782 born in March 1958; 5776 born in April 1970). Information on asthma and gynaecological disease was collected. The association of current asthma with gynaecological conditions was assessed in logistic regression analyses adjusting for smoking, housing tenure, ethnicity, birth weight, gestational age, maternal age, birth order and father‘s social class at birth and an interaction term with body mass index was tested. In both cohorts, the reporting of ovarian cysts and endometriosis were more common in women with asthma than women without asthma. The association of asthma with ovarian cysts reached conventional levels of statistical significance. This association was modified by BMI (interaction of BMI with ovarian cyst for asthma; p=0.012) in women born in 1970 but not in those born in 1958 (p=0.2). In women born in 1970 with a BMI <20 the adjusted OR for asthma with ovarian cysts was 4.77 95% CI 1.72-13.02 (BMI 20<25; 2.35 95% CI 1.28-4.28: BMI 25<30; 0.57 95% CI 0.16-2.02; BMI 30+; 0.70 95% CI 0.15-3.31)
Women with asthma are more likely to report having ovarian cysts than women without asthma. This relationship is not explained by the early life factors considered here. (presented as part of the GA2LEN gender group work)
